Long before the recent critical and popular resurgence of the Australian graphic novel, Barrie Earl (1935–2008) devoted years of his life to creating a meticulously researched and hand-drawn historical adventure set during one of the least-known conflicts of the twentieth century.
A lifelong enthusiast of adventure strips, Earl grew disillusioned with what he saw as the decline of the form in Australian newspapers. In response, he created Typhoon Tommy, a sustained narrative following an Australian aviator caught up in the brutal Chaco War (1932–1935) between Bolivia and Paraguay.
Eschewing the humour and nationalistic stereotypes common in earlier Australian war comics, Earl crafted a grounded, internationalised story that placed his protagonist within a complex web of national identities, political ambitions, and the human cost of conflict. Drawing on extensive historical research, he paid close attention to the realities of aerial warfare, the harsh Chaco environment, and the broader geopolitical tensions that foreshadowed the Second World War.
Though completed shortly before his death, Earl’s fully coloured manuscript remained unpublished for years. It was only through the efforts of his widow, Helen, and the dedication of Adelaide comic retailers Michael Baulderstone and Peter Spandrio that the work was first brought into print — albeit in black and white.
Now, through Opal Sky Media, the original hand-coloured artwork has been fully restored and published in high-quality digital and limited print editions, allowing a new generation of readers to discover this remarkable and historically significant graphic novel. At once a gripping wartime adventure and a thoughtful meditation on national identity, Typhoon Tommy: the Chaco War stands as a unique and previously overlooked contribution to Australian comics history.
